Notes |
Donated to Marshall's Band by J.D. Parr of the Baker University band. Concert notes on folder: The Cuban music of today has two aspects derived from two influences - Spanish and Negro - that have determined the course of its development. This decisive fact divides the current panorama of Cuban music into two clearly defined sectors; the typically Creole and the Negroid. In both there are beauty, force and life. The Creole music has evolved in a sensual, bland, sentimental and seductive manner, a manner growing out of the surrounding medium. The Negroid music has preserved the strong, primitive and invigorating accents of the virgin forest. In this Caribbean Sketch, the author presents, in a sharp contrast, these two facets of Cuban music: the Creole and the Negroid. A rhythm closely related to the "Conga" begins this work and then alternates with other melodies and rhythms of Creole sentiment. - Pedro Sanjuan. |
