Notes |
Donated to Marshall's Band by J.D. Parr of the Baker University band. Concert notes on folder: During the Swing Era certain bands, most noticeably Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Woody Herman, started to direct their performance more toward a strict jazz approach rather than a swing one. The music in many ways became less technical but with more of a jazz feeling. The rhythm section (piano, bass, drums and guitar) became more important as a "time" and "feeling" setting unit and often they began tunes to set the mood. This occurs in our composition from the beginning to 9. The harmony used became more altered with a lot of sevenths, ninths, etc., as is evident throughout this composition. The showmanship changed from the Swing Era approach to one of improvisation, with many soloists being featured. This composition features a brief solo by the saxophone and trumpet sections at 35 and solos by soxophone and trumpet at 51. Notes to the Conductor: This piece is characteristic of the Basie style and should be interpreted with a held-back feeling, delaying the beat. The solos at 51 may be played by one performer or by the entire section. The soloists may stand when playing. The first and second repeats, from 60 until the end may be played as many times as wished before ending the composition. All eight notes should be interpreted in a jazz style. |
