| Notes |
Donated to Marshall's Band by J.D. Parr of the Baker University band. Concert
notes on conductor's score:
As its title implies, this composition is made up of Southern motives and
melodies, interspersed with original themes founded on negro rhythms. Regarding
the former, the author claims no originality except as to harmonic treatment and
their working out. The latter are the result of the imagination of the
composer. They are blended in such a manner that in many cases it is difficult
to distinguish one from the other - the original from the traditional.
The Rhapsody, while scored for a complete Military Band, has been arranged and
cued with the practical purpose of rendering it equally effective for smaller
organizations as well. Clever grouping of the most necessary instrumental
choirs, a most reliable system of lettering in all parts and frequent mentronome
indications, all contribute their share towards rendering the composition
artistic and servicable for professional uses, rehearsals, etc., besides making
it thoroughly practical for all instrumental combinations of reasonable size.
