Notes |
Donated to Marshall's Band by J.D. Parr of the Baker University band. Concert notes for the two movements are listed on conductor's score: I German Dance No. 1 K600 In 1787 Emperor Joseph II of Austria hired Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as a composer of dance music. The Emperor was very fond of hosting masked balls, and the German Dance was very much the vogue in Vienna at the time. Consequently, Mozart's duty was to provide this style of music for these gala events. German Dance No. 1, included in this publication, is first in a set of six dances composed on January 29, 1791. The number K600 identifies the work as being among Mozart's later compositions. (He died during the same year.) This piece was originally in the key of C Major for a small orchestra of 2 violins, bass, 2 clarinets, 2 oboes, 2 flutes, 2 bassoons, 2 horns and tympani. The transcription for band has been transposed to the key of Bb Major. II March No. 2 K408 Mozart's marches, as his dances, were written for special occasions. This march is second in a group of three marches composed in Vienna near the beginning of August, 1782. The tempo is Allegro as compared to the Maestoso tempo making of both the first and third marches included in this work. The band transcription has been transposed from the Key of D Major to the Key of Eb Major. The orchestral instrumentation is for 2 violins, viola, bass, 2 oboes, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets and tympani. |
