Notes |
"The Red Mill," written in 1906 for comedians Fred Stone and David Montgomery, dealt with two footloose Americans, Con Kidder and Kid Conner, stranded in a small Dutch town without funds. In the course of several disguises and much madcap goings-on, they promote and bring to a happy resolution the obstacle-strewn romance of Gretchen and Captain Doris van Damm. In one scene the visitors rescue the heroine from and abduction plot, hanging precariously from the arms of a big red windmill as they spirit her through a window. Along the way Herbert's tunes - most notably "Moonbeams," "The Isle of Our Dreams," and "Because You're You" - are sung with no particular regard for the plot. "Every Day Is Ladies' Day" revealed the composer's natural sense of humor, while "The Streets of New York" demonstrated his flair for big production numbers.
