Notes |
'Babes In Toyland', produced in 1903, was an extravaganza frankly attempting to capitalize on the current popularity of 'The Wizard of Oz'. The show captured the child's world of fantasy and imagination through production numbers and ballets that were feasts for the eye. Herbert's music was simple, direct, infectious - especially 'I Can't Do The Sum,' 'Toyland,' and 'Never Mind, Bo-Peep,' all reminiscent of childhood ditties. The best moment musically was 'The March of the Toys,' an instrumental number which indicated that the composer was happiest when writing for the orchestra. From: "A History of Music in American Life, Vol. II" by Ronald L. Davis. |
